Painting the Sky, Inspiring the Soul
Nadia Parsons is a contemporary sky painter whose work bridges realism and abstraction, transforming clouds, light, atmosphere, and memory into emotionally resonant paintings. Her work captures not only what the sky looks like, but what it feels like—moments of wonder, reflection, power, possibility, and connection.
Artist Statement
Moments of change in the sky are fleeting. Some leave a lasting impression while others pass unnoticed. Our thoughts can be just as fleeting. We occasionally hear our inner voice with remarkable clarity, yet often lose those insights amid the distractions of everyday life. In much the same way, we frequently miss the splendor the sky offers us.
The sky connects us to the world and beyond. It reveals the enormity and grandeur of the universe while reminding us of both our smallness and our significance within it. Looking upward creates an opportunity to pause, reflect, and experience something larger than ourselves.
My paintings explore these moments of beauty, awareness, and emotion. I seek to hold onto experiences that might otherwise disappear—whether they exist in the sky before us or arise within us emotionally. These feelings, thoughts, and insights are infused into every painting I create.
The sky evokes an enormous range of emotions in me, and I strive to express their rawness and complexity. Through paint, I create a space where wonder, awe, longing, joy, and contemplation can coexist. My hope is that each viewer discovers their own emotional connection within the work.
While many paintings begin with photographs I have captured, I increasingly move beyond literal observation. I carry a camera wherever I go, recording fleeting moments of light, cloud formations, and atmospheric drama that speak to me. Yet these images become only a starting point. In the studio, memory, imagination, and emotion guide the transformation of those moments into paintings that balance realism and abstraction.
The sky calls me everywhere. Over rivers, beaches, and open fields, it reveals its immense scope and drama. In cities, framed by buildings and glimpsed from highways or high-rises, it can be equally powerful. Wherever I encounter it, I feel compelled to respond.
When I look up and observe the wonder of the sky, I experience a profound connection to the world and the universe beyond it. Whether I include the horizon, architecture, or focus solely on clouds and atmosphere, my paintings are an affirmation of that connection.
